The Bible tells us God is near to the brokenhearted. Sadly, some religionists have taken that to mean God wants you to have a broken heart or that He is the one to break your heart. That’s like thinking that the EMT who shows up to treat you when you’re in an automobile accident is the one who caused the wreck.
God comes near to you because He wants to heal your broken heart. In Jesus’ first sermon He pointed out that a broken heart is the cause of every type of captivity. The Hebrew letter MEM warns against the pain of a broken heart and how God wants to bring healing to your heart! But here’s the irony: we can experience His healing when we let Him into our heart and surrender to Him, which is a fearful prospect for the person already suffering from the pain of a broken heart.
