The Bible actually teaches that nothing is good or evil within itself. It is the person and their intentions and motives that make anything good or evil.
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled… nothing is pure (Titus 1:15). One person may make a decision to have a better life and use that improvement to serve others, touch the world with the gospel or feed the poor. Another may do the same, but use their improvement to party, become more self-indulgent and less reliable of God. It’s all about what’s in your heart!
It’s interesting that Jesus only told one person to go and sell all you have. The only reason that person was so directed was because he had issues about money that prevented him from entering the Kingdom of God. He couldn’t trust God because his trust was in his riches. On one hand, many people God used through history were quite wealthy. Conversely, many poor and sacrificial are self-righteous and trust in their works of sacrifice more than they trust in God’s goodness. The Scripture is clear: prosperity only destroys fools (Proverbs 1:32). A fool is someone who will not learn by instruction so they are left to consequences. If you establish your identity in Christ and you choose to live a life of love and generosity, success and prosperity will not change you. Success and money are a lot like drugs, they don’t make you who you are; they simply facilitate you to more freely express who you are!
One important step to take today is to live today like you will when your life becomes what you have chosen. Be generous with what you have today and you’ll be generous when you have even more.
