The idea that our feelings are not important is one of those ascetic heresies that slipped into the body of Christ very early. Our every emotional capability exists because we are created in the likeness and image of God! Therefore, no emotional capacity is inherently good or bad. If we didn’t have feelings we would be incapable of giving or receiving love.
We obviously should not be led by our feelings, we should be led by the truth of God’s Word. But there is a paradox we have failed to grasp: we should not be led by our feelings, but we will. Anyone who has ever struggled between information and feelings can attest to the fact that feelings win over information nearly every time. Every destructive thing we do is a result of being led by our feelings.
Here’s the great news. Feelings are simply what we feel in response to what we think, believe and do! God teaches us how to lead our feelings and make them work for us. In fact, positive feelings will strengthen us when we are doing something that is difficult; peaceful feelings will cause our bodies to heal when we are sick; feelings of compassion will help us forgive the unforgivable. The secret to abiding, positive, healthy feelings is to live in the realm where we consistently and habitually experience God’s love.
