The great thing about the New Covenant is God interacts with you personally; no one else can show you how to experience God. The challenging thing is no one can teach us how to experience God! Teachers and preachers can tell stories, they can show biblical patterns of prayer and they can inspire you, but they can only lead you to the entrance of the holy place. You have to go in alone and learn to connect with Him for yourself. You don’t have to copy anyone; it doesn’t have to be just like I or anyone else would do. The one thing we all share in common is we base all we do, say and believe on what we have in Jesus according to the Scripture. But beyond that, it must be personal and it must be you expressing the truth in a way that works for you.
You may start by learning to pray without ceasing. When you read your Bible always ask God to teach you; to show you how to apply what you’re reading to your life. Anytime you’re making decisions yield yourself to God in your heart for His wisdom and direction. Make God your Source for everything you do, not in a religious way, but internally in your heart, intentions and motives. Then begin spending some private time with Him. It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 minutes or 5 hours; what matters is connecting with God!
Cultivating an intimate relationship with God is no different than developing intimacy with anyone. It’s about honesty, openness and communication. You will figure out what works for you and you will figure out what you need in your prayer room environment. This will become your own relationship and, in time, you will learn to hear the voice of God clearly.
