The world is under the sway of the wicked one, but we have a choice, and by the Spirit of God we have the power to live in that choice.1 John 5:18-19, We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. We know… the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

While the believer may struggle with sin, he doesn’t embrace sin as a way of life; instead, he keeps himself. The words “touch him” are more properly translated “attach to or take hold of.” When we embrace sin, that which is not of faith, anything where we see ourselves as less than God declares us to be, that which opposes God’s Word, name and character, we are not keeping ourselves.

The world is under the sway of the wicked one, but we have a choice, and by the Spirit of God we have the power to live in that choice. If I determine what is true by what is happening in other people’s lives I am interpreting God’s Word by something other than the life, teachings, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Subjective reasoning is the basis of what the Bible calls private interpretation, which is the basis for much of the self-justified iniquity in the Church today. It is also a contributor to powerless Christian living!
