The Bible calls the path of righteousness smooth and straight so we don’t stumble. So many people make this statement but actually the Bible says just the opposite. The Bible calls the path of righteousness smooth and straight so we don’t stumble. God even tells us the knowledge of His Word is like having a light that shines on that path to make sure we don’t trip. This path is also called the pathway of life and no death is found in it. Jesus said as we follow Him on this path it is easy and light.

Since what the Bible says about this is true, why do so many people struggle with the path of righteousness? Simple! Most believers attempt to walk in a righteousness imposed on them by religion, which is strikingly similar to that of the Pharisees.

From Matthew chapter 5 through chapter 7 Jesus compares the righteousness of the Pharisees/religion to the righteousness He has called us to walk. They were told to hate their enemies; we were told to love ours. They were told to judge; we were told to recognize the fruit but not judge. Their concept of righteousness didn’t glorify God, it glorified them. They sought a confidence before God based on their works instead of His works.
