When we believe the truth about Jesus in our heart we are born of the spirit and we get a new heart as a result of that new birth. We all have an assumed identity. It is based on every experience we’ve had, both good and bad! The Bible tells us our heart is covered with footprints, which are the sources of much of our chaos and pain. It also tells us this is incurable. You can’t fix it or counsel it to a resolution. The only cure is to get a new heart, which happens as you believe what Jesus did through His resurrection, and confess Him as Lord. With or in the heart man believes unto righteousness. When we believe the truth about Jesus in our heart we are born of the spirit and we get a new heart as a result of that new birth.

Since the heart is intimately linked to identity, who we believe ourselves to be, this new heart will cause an instantaneous shift in whom we perceive ourselves to be. Sadly, we often allow that to slip away as we succumb to the deception of religion. As we lose touch with our heart and accept the false idea that now we have to get righteous, instead of being reminded that we are righteous, we start thinking we are still that person that our experiences define. Any thought, idea, or opinion that we have of ourself that is not based on being a new creation in Christ is an illusion, a vain imagination, and an opposition to truth that will stop our spiritual life dead in its tracks.
