If we want our plans to succeed and leave our relationship with God intact, we need wisdom before we take the first step. One thing most essential to any plan is knowing where to start. There are many things the Bible tells us to do “first.” Some of this is stated very clearly and some seems vague. Some of these statements point us to specific details, others deal with our attitudes. Jesus told us in all of our life endeavors to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. That’s pretty clear! Most of His other teachings actually show us how to do that in real life.

Before we attempt to put together our plan, we need to do a “heart check.” “Is my relationship with God my top priority?” Proverbs tells us the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If we want our plans to succeed and leave our relationship with God intact, we need wisdom before we take the first step.

The fear of the Lord, as I have shared many times, isn’t the fear of God hurting us; it is awe, respect and love; it is the value you have for the relationship.  Understanding (which is the precursor to wisdom) makes us capable of seeing the potential good or destructive outcomes of our choices and actions. Wisdom is the practical application of God’s truth that shows us how to apply the truth in a way that keeps us on the path of life. It keeps us from veering onto the path of destruction. It ensures, more than anything else, that we will guard our relationship with God, i.e. guard our heart. This is the starting place!
