Knowledge, understanding and wisdom represent a continuum in every decision making process. We usually start an endeavor by gathering the information. Understanding has the unique quality of being able to perceive both the positives and negatives in a decision. Wisdom is a process whereby God not only leads you to the desired outcome; He develops you into the person who can actually live in that outcome without destruction.
In gathering knowledge we have a tendency to only gather the information that supports our predetermined decision. That’s nearly always going to end in disaster. Incorrect information means we can’t really have understanding about the pros and cons. But wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. This is not the fear of God hurting you, it is the fear of damaging your relationship in any way. If this is not our starting place we can never see the potential for problems.
