The Dr. Phil Syndrome
The other day I saw a segment of Dr. Phil where he challenged a woman with a lifelong problem to make a decision about her future. There, in the emotion of the moment, with millions of viewers looking on, she made the commitment! It reminded me of a preacher holding a microphone up to someone at an altar call in order to capture their every response. Of course they’re going to say the right thing; everyone is listening!
Fortunately, Dr. Phil is a professional who realizes the decision his guests make at that moment is only as good as the commitment to follow through for real help.
